Ava Hartman & Impression Jump to a Blue Ribbon at the Devon Horse Show

Ava Hartman at the 2023 Devon Horse Show and Country Fair

Devon, Pa. — On a sunny Spring morning in the Dixon Oval Ring, 14-year-old equestrian Ava Hartman secured a blue ribbon victory in the Junior Hunter Handy Round at the esteemed Devon Horse Show and Country Fair. As the oldest and largest outdoor multi-breed horse competition in the United States, Ava was excited just to be invited to her first Devon Horse Show this year. She had hoped to attend on her large pony in 2021, but the COVID-19 cancellation put her plans on hold. Her hard work finally paid off as she received two invitations this year — one on her Junior Hunter, Impression, and one on Bronson CR, a jumper that she leases from Nestledown Equine Services LLC.

On Friday afternoon, Ava on Impression, her own 2013 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Etoulon VDL x Tornita L), rode their first jumping round in the Junior Hunter Large 15 & Under division. The round went smoothly and scored an 80, which was just out of the ribbons at 9th (out of 20). Following the over fences round, the under-saddle class was held. Amongst some of the most stunning junior hunters in the country, Ava and Impression finished 5th.

Day two of the Junior Hunters started with the Handy Round. Ava and Impression, who were second in the order, put in an absolutely beautiful round, which scored an 87. The score earned the pair the “Devon Blue” first place ribbon. Tears and smiles were abundant at the award ceremony.

Later that day, the Junior Hunter Division concluded with the Stake Class. The pair put in another impressive round, scoring an 84, which earned 7th Place.

“Wow – I don’t even know where to start. My dream was to just ride at Devon. That alone was huge for me. Then we got 5th place in the hack yesterday. I was so happy to get that 5th place ribbon. But then to win a blue ribbon in a jumping round at Devon…I don’t even know what to think of that. Poe [Impression] and I aren’t big names riding for one of the national barns. For a pair like us to win a blue ribbon at Devon is crazy. I keep thinking that I’m dreaming. I’m so proud this horse – he really jumped his heart out. He is so much fun to ride and I love him,” said Hartman who wasn’t able to hold back her tears after receiving her blue ribbon and silver Devon award plate.

Ava and Impression finished the Junior Hunter Large 15 & under division 4th out of 20 overall. Paige Walkenbach on San Pedro 15 was division Champion and Vivian Golden on Chamonix was Reserve Champion.
